Morgan Stanley is an American multinational investment bank and financial services company headquartered in New York City, New York. It was originally founded as Morgan Stanley Group, Inc. by Harold Stanley and Henry S. Morgan (grandson of J.P. Morgan) on September 16, 1935.
The current Morgan Stanley was formed in 1997 when Morgan Stanley Group, Inc. merged with Dean Witter Discover & Co., a company that was founded in 1924. The original name of the new firm was “Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Discover & Co.”, but it changed its name to “Morgan Stanley” in 2001.
The company operates through the following business segments: Wealth Management, Investment Banking & Capital Markets, Sales & Trading, Research, and Investment Management.
